Ericsson Unveils New Router

Ericsson  today announces the launch of its SSR 8010 Smart Services Router (SSR), the latest addition to the SSR 8000 family and a key component of its portfolio of 4th-generation IP networking solutions launched in 2011. The portfolio is ideal for mobile and fixed IP backhaul that can aggregate 2G, 3G, 4G and fixed access traffic.

The 10-slot SSR 8010 complements the 20-slot SSR 8020, enabling operators to deploy the SSR family in different parts of the network: IP Edge and aggregation. The SSR 8010 consumes only 3.3 watts per gigabit of traffic throughput and is best suited for applications where 10 available slots will be optimal to meet current capacity and upcoming growth - for example in metro networks. Capacity planning will drive the decision and a customer can deploy both 8010 and 8020 nodes in the same network. The SSR 8010's smaller footprint provides additional flexibility for operators to deploy networks with distributed architectures.

Huawei Launches Large Switches

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider today launched its innovative CloudEngine series switches at Interop 2012. The CloudEngine series switches provide the industry’s largest single-frame switching capacity of up to 48T and support high-density switching of 100GE, 40GE, 10GE and GE interfaces, as well as virtualization and computing, storage and network convergence. This enables the sustainable development of enterprise data centers over a 10 year span.

Committed to providing a better way for enterprises to tap into the opportunities presented by the rise of cloud computing and ICT convergence, Huawei’s CloudEngine series switches provide stable, reliable and secure services to help customers build scalable, virtualized and converged data center fabric architectures.

“The deployment of Cloud-based services brings with it extreme network challenges in the areas of traffic growth, service scale and manageability. With the announcement of the Cloud Fabric Architecture and CloudEngine 12800 series, Huawei is addressing the needs of this environment by providing customers a solid reference architecture and a highly scalable, converged and fully virtualized platform. This innovative approach will provide mid market through high end enterprise customers the foundation for a customizable network environment managed with a single fabric interface,” said Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst, ZK Research.

Net2EZ deploys Transmode for U.S. data center interconnect

Optical transport systems developer Transmode says that Net2EZ, a US-based managed data center service provider, has upgraded its high-speed optical network using Transmode's TM-Series and TG-Series optical networking platforms.

Net2EZ replaced its existing DWDM equipment with Transmode's platforms to increase the capacity of its network, Transmode says. The new protected fiber ring is designed to offer uninterrupted service to seven data centers across the United States with multiple 10G and 1G connections. At the same time, Net2EZ has added three new data centers to the network. Net2EZ plans to replicate this network architecture as they continue their expansion across the US.

The network uses the TM-Series 10G transponders with forward error correction for long-haul transmission and also has redundant fiber paths for network protection.

The upgrade also improves Net2EZ’s network management capabilities that enable it to identify and resolve issues remotely. The redundancy built into the infrastructure enables Net2EZ to keep the network running while performing maintenance.

"We have redundant fiber between our buildings and with the Transmode solution we were able to get better diagnostics and increased performance,” said Daniel Faubel, director of network engineering at Net2EZ. “We can now tell if we are having problems without actually having to unplug the fiber, and run a fiber tester to figure it out and can access our Virginia network remotely from Los Angeles."

Cable&Wireless Worldwide chooses Ciena for 100-Gbps link

Cable&Wireless Worldwide has chosen the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform from Ciena Corp. to power a 100-Gbps link between London and Monaco, Ciena says. The 2,800-km route will be the longest 100-Gbps deployment on the continent, the company asserts.

The link will also connect with Milan, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, and Amsterdam. The 100-Gbps technology is being added to an existing CWW network that currently supports 40-Gbps data rates using Ciena technology as well.

Increasing bandwidth demands drove CWW to the network upgrade, including an anticipated traffic surge from CWW’s role in the Europe India Gateway (EIG) undersea cable system.

“The explosive demand for capacity promises to continue as the number of public and private network connections increases for consumers and businesses and as these connections support bandwidth-intensive applications such as video and remote storage,” says John Paul Hemingway, EMEA vice president of strategic development at Ciena. “A long-term Ciena partner, Cable&Wireless Worldwide is making a highly progressive move in Europe with the region’s longest coherent 100G link, which forms the basis for a resilient, scalable, and flexible backbone network.”
